Karma & Other On-Line Stuff:
Now
It's past my bed I know . He was the youngest of the Beatles, the "quiet one." And while folks don't often realize it, he contributed as composer more than his share of tunes to what, at one point anyway, seemed like it would be an endless anthology of Beatles tunes. The Beatles, of course, did not last as long as most of us expected they would. Their last live show was back in '66, at Candlestick Park. After that, the music still continued: Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album ... and, of course, Abbey Road. But a little more than a half year after its release, McCartney announced he was leaving. Among
Harrison's Beatles-era compositions?
... and the one which seems to tell his story in itself ...
The year after the break-up, the benefit album from The Concert for Bangla Desh came out, with Dylan and Ravi Shankar contributing. Ringo joined him a couple of years later for the release of Living in the Material World, and after that came the first Dark Horse album.
George Harrison continued to write and record. And a variety of folks would step up here and there to work with him -- Billy Preston, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton. But then, in 1988, there came the Traveling Wilburys -- that great ensemble, born of necessity, when Harrison needed a place to practice and Dylan offered up his garage ... and Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty just happened to drop by. {Though why they kept changing their names -- from Nelson to Spike Wilbury, from Charlie T., Jr., to Muddy, from Lucky to Boo -- we may never know.} Almost ten years after that first Wilburys album was released, in June of 1998, George Harrison made public the fact that he had throat cancer, though he sort of promised not to die "just yet." As if that were not enough, the following year, an intruder entered the apartment of him and his wife Olivia and stabbed George Harrison four times in the chest, collapsing a lung. The following year, the assailant -- evidently yet another obsessed with The Beatles -- is found not guilty by reason of insanity. Which brings us to this year. In March, All Things Must Pass becomes a certified six-times platinum album. It was released almost 31 years ago to the day -- November 27th, 1970 -- that George Harrison passed on. ... And now we know the rest.
Ed. Note: Last issue, with the then-recent tribute to John Lennon and the up-coming anniversary of his death, we uncharacteristically devoted our Links to Living Together On-Line to Lennon in a piece entitled, half in jest, Instant Karma & Other On-Line Stuff. Now, less than a month later, George Harrison has died. And while we thought to pay tribute to him -- more appropriately perhaps -- in Music & Sound, we decided instead to pay tribute here, in Living Together. In fact, we've even gone so far as to change the title from Links to Living Together On-Line to the title you now see -- Instant Karma & Other On-Line Stuff. Following, then, are a few links to well-done sites with info and more on George Harrison:
. About
Links to Living Together On-Line Well, here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help. So each issue, we post a few links in Living Together to sites that might interest you. Sometimes the links will be related to one another ... sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling. Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not. Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle and focus on quality sites. ... In that light, we hope you enjoy these sites as much as we have. . ******* ******* If you know of any links that you think are worthwhile, why not send them along to ... links@downstreetmagazine.com ... If we agree, we'll be happy to include
them in an upcoming issue to pass the word along. ... ******* ******* . |
