Some folks love it, while some consider it an inferior building
material to brick.  But whatever your attitude, it's a part of Xmas.
So in that spirit, we say:

OK ... Fruitcake

fruit·cake (frööt´käk´) n.
1. A heavy, spiced cake containing nuts and candied or dried fruits.
2. Slang. A crazy or an eccentric person.
The American Heritage Dictionary

Fruitcakes make ideal gifts because the Postal Service
has been unable to find a way to damage them

When, where, and how "fruitcake" came to be associated with someone 'nuts' {?!?} or eccentric is something we'll leave to the linguists and etymologists.  For our purposes this month, all we're interested in is the original definition -- that confection of fruit, nuts, and, depending upon the confectioner, God knows what else.  ...

In that dark, we hope rum- or brandy-soaked light, we went in search of fruitcake recipes on the web, and, as you might guess, we found them -- just like fruitcakes at Christmas -- in abundance.

Given the sheer magnitude of sifting and sorting through all of them, and in the spirit of generosity which is Christmas, we thought better of it and decided to leave that task to you.  And since we were not about to try each recipe, we don't have any easy way of rating them.  Therefore, once again, we leave off our more usual approach to links -- three or so with a few comments -- and leave you to your own devices and desires to peruse {or not} any or all of the many fruitcake recipes we found.

Here, then, in no particular order, are more fruitcake recipes than even the most sane person with lots of time on her or his hands would ever know what to do with.  ...  Good luck.  ...

Alright.  This won't take you up to Cinqo de Maio.  But it's enough recipes so that you'll be able to try one every day between Christmas and Ash Wednesday.  ... And by then, even if you've only tried a few, it's probably a good time to start fasting anyway.  ...  Meanwhile, enjoy.

About Links to Farm & Garden On-Line
The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  To put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction -- maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there -- is actually making its way to the search engines.

Well, here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Farm & Garden to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.

Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle and focus on quality sites.  ...  In that light, we hope you enjoy these sites as much as we have.
