Migration Software Info & Reviews
Links to Info & Tools That Can Save You Hours with
      Your New PC

As we mentioned in this month's Computer Tutor: Migrating to a New PC, if you got a new PC for the holidays, then you may want to consider some migration software to help you move your old stuff to your new machine with as few headaches and as little time lost as possible.

In that light, this month's Links to Computers & Tech On-Line is providing links to Migration Software Info & Reviews.  ...

We covered the basics -- which software to look at, pricing info, and the various kinds and levels of functionality -- in this month's Computer Tutor.  ...  Here, we'll point you to some of the best of what we found for reviews of this type of software from a variety of sources.

Finally, while our focus in Computer Tutor was on individual home users, both a number of these software titles and the articles and reviews we've included are aimed at business or even corporate users.  The rationale for including the latter is that those business and corporate IT folks are the ones whose jobs depend upon high quality tools, so you're likely to find a wider selection of tools than if you stuck to the home user-oriented reviews only, as well as more depth and a higher standard.  Just keep in mind that, if you are a home user, you'll have to filter the IT-oriented stuff for your own goals.  So, for example, if the main selling point of a particular brand of software for some IT reviewer is its speed, that may not matter much to you, since you don't have 100, much less 1000 PC's to migrate.

Enough said.  ...  If you want to learn more about migration software, then check out the following reviews and articles.  And if you want the info from the proverbial horses' mouths, we've also included the links we provided directly to the software makers' web sites in this month's Computer Tutor again at the bottom of the list.

  • Mass migration - Software Reviews - CNET.com
CNet does it usual comprehensive job on Aloha Bob's PC-Relocator 2.6, PCsync 2.0, pc2pc, and Personality Tranxport Pro.  Aloha Bob took their best of breed recommendation.  But you'll want to read the article to find out why.  They also have a quick table called Migration by the Numbers to help ID which software offers which features.  Definitely worth the read.  ...  We're also including direct links to CNet's Full Reviews for each title, which are not part of the article per se, and therefore there's no ready way to get from the article to them and back.  ...

  • Review Desktop personality migration software, NetWorkWorld Fusion
Obviously, given the source, the slant on this one is from the IT/network world.   NetWorkWorld gives their top honor to Altiris PC Transplant Pro, which, according to them, surpassed tested Miramar Systems Desktop DNA 2.5, PowerQuest Migration Manager 2.1, Symantec Ghost 7.0 and Tranxition Personality Tranxport Professional (PT Pro) 2.1.   But, as they note, "While some of these products offered additional functionality, [they] limited [their] tests to the personality transfer arena."  In other words, in getting the specialized tweaks and settings over, rather than whole applications.

  • ZDNet Australia News & Tech Enterprise OS upgrades: Migrating on the curve
Obviously another article with an IT bent, we include it here because, while it leans even more heavily toward concerns that only an IT manager would care about, it's the only one that talked about the downside of migration.  ...
    .
That was the only reason.  But it seemed like enough.  ...
    .

  • PCWorld.com - Clone One PC's Settings to Another
    SmartClone - Software Reviews - CNET.com

If you read the piece from PCWorld side-by-side with the CNet Review, you'd think you were reading about two completely different software titles, but you'd be wrong.  The PCWorld piece -- which focuses primarily on SmartClone and gives only passing reference to Aloha Bob, Upgrade Commander, PC Sync, and IntelliMover 3.0, and the pc2pc migration service -- extols the virtues of SmartClone, which it says "makes easy work of migrating everything."  ...
    .
On the other hand, CNet, while acknowledging its easy of use, notes that it will move only settings, not software, and calls SmartClone migration "slow and sloppy," not to mention the fact that it "can cost a fortune."
    .
Just goes to show you something you probably already suspected.  And, while here we are in print, we'll repeat the immortal words of Marvin Gaye anyway:  " ... believe half of what you see, not a line of what you hear."
    .

  • TechTV Inside Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer
One of the much-touted virtues of Windows XP is it's supposed ability to help you migrate to it painlessly.  {Why they don't advertise that instead of the ability to send pictures via e-mail -- which lots of us have been doing for years already -- is beyond me.}  But TechTV takes the issue head-on with a solid and detailed overview of what this particular snippet of XP will and won't do.  ...  Lots of screenshots, too, for those who like their info visually enhanced.

About Links to Computers & Tech On-Line
The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  To put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction -- maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there -- is actually making its way to the search engines.

Well, here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Computers & Tech to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.

Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle and focus on quality sites.  ...  In that light, we hope you enjoy these sites as much as we have.
