The Book Worm

.

We called around to the local bookstores and asked,
and the owners and workers told us ...
What They Want for Christmas

Also see "Harry Potter, Plain & Simple,"
a review of the books, the film, and more
by Ted Buxton

If you're a bookworm, then one of the things you look forward to every holiday season is a great book.  For some, that might mean a good read -- the latest fiction or non-fiction.  For others, it could easily mean a glorious coffee-table tome to page through on cold winter nights. ...

Whatever your pleasure, we thought it might be interesting to find out what those who own and work our local bookshops would like to find under their trees this holiday season.  So we called around, and, voilá, here are the results:

  • Deerleap Books, Bristol
Who we spoke with:   Carol Wells & Judith Bryant
    • What Carol chose ...
      • Architects of Peace: Visions of Hope in Words & Images by Michael Collopy & Jason Gardner (Eds.), and Walter Cronkite
New World Library, Novato, Calif. 2000.
"I thought it looked interesting.  ...  Especially after the events of September 11th, peace is more in the forefront of our minds.  ...  And it has all sorts of people, so it shows that anyone can be an 'architect of peace'."
        .
    • What Judith chose ...
      • Celebrate Your Creative Self : Over 25 Exercises to Unleash the Artist Within by Mary Todd Beam  ...  and
Painting with Water Soluble Oils by Sean Dye
Both from  North Light Books, Cinn, Ohio. 2001.
"Can I pick two? ... Celebrate Your Creative Self is a series of exercises in painting, collage.  She calls them exercises, though they're really more like lessons,  ... And Painting with Water Soluble Oils.  Well, I got the paints before I got the book.  But really, it's one of those wonderful books with all sorts of ideas, one that you can just look at for hours, even if you're not interested in painting."
        .
  • Flying Pig Children's Books, Charlotte
Who we spoke with:   Roman Vogel & Josie Leavitt
    • What Roman chose ...
      • The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
        Farrar, Straus and Giroux. 2001.
"I actually read it already.  But if I hadn't, that's what I would want."
        .
    • What Mary chose ...
      • Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment by Stacy C. Hollander (Ed.), McGraw-Hill Professional Publishing, N.Y., 2001. {New 2002 ed. coming}
"Well, I'm studying to be an EMT, so I'd love to get Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment.  It's like the Merck Manual, only more detailed.  It's a little weird, I guess, but that's what I'd want."
        .
  • Monroe Street Books, Middlebury
Who we spoke with:   Dick Chodkowski
    What he chose ...
    • Moment Preserved: Eight Essays in Photographs and Words by Irving Penn
Simon and Schuster, New York. 1960.
"We kind of specialize in photography, so I'd have to say Irving Penn's Moment Preserved.  He was a fashion photographer, and the book came out in, I think it was, the late '50s or early '60s.  I'd really love to get hold of a copy."
      .
  • Otter Creek Used & Rare Books, Middlebury
    Who we spoke with:
       Claire Hearne
    What she chose ...
    • The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
      Farrar, Straus and Giroux. 2001.
"I know we're a used and rare book store, so I should probably pick something different.  But I was interested to read it."
      .
  • Vermont Book Shop, Middlebury
Who we spoke with:   Josh Yunger & Mary Worley
    • What Josh, who handles the music end of VBS, chose ...
      • Ten New Songs by Leonard Cohen
Sony/Columbia, CD or LP. October 2001.
"It's an acquired taste, but I'd have to say Leonard Cohen's new album.  It's even available on vinyl."
        .
    • What Mary, who works the book end of things at VBS, chose ...
      • American Radiance : The Ralph Esmerian Gift to the American Folk Art Museum by Stacy C. Hollander (Ed.), Gerard C. Wertkin, and John Bigelow Taylor (Photographer).
        Harry N. Abrams, N.Y. 2001.
"Let's see ...  I'd have to choose American Radiance from the American Folk Art Museum.  You'd have to like folk art, of course; but it's really well done, with lots of large plates.  It's a beautiful work."

Browse Global, Shop Local  ...  DownStreet encourages its readers to avail themselves of the internet and all it has to offer.  There's a wealth of info and ideas to be found.  But come buying time, we encourage you to support local merchants and businesses as much as possible by shopping locally.  We realize that some of what you can find on-line you won't find locally; and there may be times when the difference in price is just too great to ignore.  But the value of shopping locally is rewarded many times over -- in building community, maintaining tax revenues, and making possible the support of community ventures and services, in the schools and throughout the community.  ...  Thanks.
