Holiday Art & Images

With the holiday season upon us, we thought some folks might like to see {or, in some cases, even be able -- legally -- to download and use} holiday art & images.  The following sites, then, include a variety of images and art work ...  from classic paintings to Victorian themes to artistic menorahs and more.

Enjoy!  ...  And Happy Holidays!

  • A Religious Christmas and Advent
While there are lots of sites out there with classic art images of The Nativity or The Adoration of the Magi and more, this site -- sponsored by St. John's Lutheran Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin -- has gathered together some links to choice samples from around the web.  ...

Simply click anywhere on the image of the opening page, then look for Art in the links that come up.  ...  Once you do, you'll find direct links to works by Correggio, Raphael, Juan de Flandes, Albrecht Durer, Botticelli, Raphael, Fra Anegelico, Filippo Lippi, and more.  There are also images from Medieval breviaries and Books of Hours, and even images from modern postage stamps.

You can certainly find much more out there than this site provides links to.  But if you'd like a quick and easy way to see some of the best of the classic works with a Christmas theme, then this is a great place to start.  ...

  • Christmas Images
This site is part of Stock Solution -- a company which specializes in licensing stock images for commercial uses.  ...  While we don't normally include commercial-only sites, we included this one because of its wealth of imagery.  But the good news is, there are a couple of free downloads you can use, and if you're so inclined, you can purchase individual images relatively inexpensively, and collections at an even better deal.  They sell each of their fairly substantial collections of a dozen to a dozen and a half images for about a dollar an image, sometimes less.  That's seems like a reasonable price for personal use, including making your own greeting cards.

The collections here are fairly extensive, with both sacred and secular images from past and present.  There are four initial listings, including:  Vintage images of Christmas past; Vintage angel images of Christmas past; Traditional images of Christmas present; and Winter scenics of Christmas present.  But for those with specific leanings toward things Victorian, the real find is probably their Olde-Fashioned Christmas Eve collections, some of which are derived from original, 100-year old chromolithographs.
    ..
We're not exactly sure how one goes about copyrighting stuff this old for re-sale.  But many of their images could be the perfect solution to your own homemade cards.

  • Hanukkah - Festival of Lights
This link is part of World ORT -- one of the largest NGO education and training non-profits in the world, with activities in over 100 countries. {For those who are curious, ORT is an acronym derived from the Russian words Obschestvo Remeslenovo i zemledelcheskovo Trouda, meaning The Society for Trades and Agricultural Labour.}...

The site uses frames, so the link above will take you to the page with everything having to do with the holiday.  Simply click on Art, however, and you'll find a small but definitively interesting 'slide show' of art in the form of menorahs, including an elaborate Hanunkkiya of the Eight Gates of Jerusalem.  Unfortunately, the images could have been of higher quality, but that should not deter you from taking a look.

There's lots of 'art' out there, including lots of schlock.  But this is one of the more interesting, even if highly focused, collections.  For those interested in additional images for Chanukah, we also invite you to visit this month's Links to Religion & Spirit, which includes a couple of sites devoted to Chanukah at which you'll find more art, as well as lots of other info.

A Note About Links to Arts & Craft On-Line
The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  To put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction -- maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there -- is actually making its way to the search engines.

Well, here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Arts & Craft to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.

Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle and focus on quality sites.  ...  In that light, we hope you enjoy these sites as much as we have.
