Links to Living Together On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Living Together to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...

Lennon's FBI file, declassified under
the Freedom of Information Act

Prompted more by the up-coming anniversary of John Lennon's death {December 8th} and the recent all-star tribute to John Lennon than by the name of our new advice columnist {though not completely disconnected}, we thought we'd devote this month's Links to Living Together On-Line to sites devoted to John Lennon.  ...  He would have turned 60 last month.

The first site we went to, of course, was Instant Karma.  But from there, things got a little more difficult.  There are tons of John Lennon sites out there, most of reasonably ok quality, but most also terribly the same.  You know, the usual fan sites:  some photos, some clips, some quotes, maybe a discography and some lyrics.  But we wanted to find some that were a little different than most, and we did.

After Instant Karma, we're not saying the others are the best sites out there.  Only that they're among the more interesting.  ...

So, in the hope that for those of you who were/are John Lennon fans and want to be reminded of why, or for those who simply want to take a virtual stroll down Penny Lane, we invite you to visit.  ...

  • IK! Instant Karma! Online - The Original  John and Yoko Magazine
This offering comes straight from the source.  So if you're a John Lennon fan, then Instant Karma probably will get you.  ...
    .
As you might expect, the site has CDs and other stuff for sale.  But there's lots more besides, including an Archive of magazine issues.  In addition, you'll find links to Instant News, John and Yoko, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon {who gave a blow-out performance at the tribute to his dad}, Julian Lennon, the Elliot Mintz Aids Memoir, and Onovox Info -- a digest listserv for Yoko fans.  There's an extensive, on-going biography of John Lennon, too.
    .
Not everything here is beyond the ken of most parents.  But you might find a tip on something you hadn't even considered, and that makes this site worth the visit.

  • The John Lennon FBI files website

  • FBI - Freedom of Information Act - John Lennon
These two sites are obviously related by topic. But the similarity ends there.  ...
The John Lennon FBI files website is the site of Jon Wiener, author Come Together: John Lennon in His Time, and of Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI Files.  The links will take you to either the UC or Amazon sites, where you can read the first chapter.  But the real gold here is two-fold.

First, there's the link to a RealAudio track of Wiener being interviewed on Terri Gross's Fresh Air, a worthwhile listen.  Then, there'a also a link to Wiener's article, "Lennon's MI5-FBI Files," which appeared in The Nation [March 13th, 2000].  The link takes you directly to the magazine's archive.  Once there, you'll also find a number of links to other sources, including the official site of David Shayler, the former MI5 officer and whistleblower who exposed the British intelligence agency's abuses of power.
    .
The FBI site is a little different in tone.  It simply says:  "John Lennon, 248 pages. Investigation conducted when the FBI learned that John Lennon contributed $75,000 to a group planning to disrupt the Republican National Convention in 1972."  There are then links to 3 downloads of Adobe Acrobat [*.pdf files], more than 100 pages each.

  • WorkingClassHero.com - A Tribute to John Lennon
Back in March of last year, WorkingClassHero.com was "Website of the Week" for TV & Satellite Week Magazine in the UK.  However that may be, it's the site we found most useful and interesting among the definitively fan-oriented sites.  ...  It's got lots of what you might expect, and some you wouldn't.
    .
The main page contains links to a Biography, a Discography, E-Mail, a Photo Album, Quotes, RealVideo, a Message Board, the obligatory Guestbook, a Club Chat section, one called Mind Games, a Personals section, an Art Gallery, a MIDI Jukebox, Lennon E-Cards, Classified Ads, and a new Poetry Page and an Artist Page where visitors have contributed their own works.  One of the delights of the site, however, is the JukeBox page where you can select from dozens of Lennon's tunes in any order you please and listen to them on-line.  There's also a Guitar Tab page hat will take you to Olga, a chord and lyrics search engine that is as good as it is fast.
    .
For all of the above, we recommend a visit.
    Rating:  **** [4 Stars].
