& Garden Links to Farm & Garden On-Line
. Links
to Farm & Garden On-Line The
amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a
search can attest to. And, to put it all in context, best estimates say
that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its
way to the search engines. Well ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help. So each issue, we
post a few links in Farm & Garden to sites that might interest you.
Sometimes the links will be related to one another ... sometimes
we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling. In either case, we think
we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be
of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the
bustle. ... Vermont
Congressional Dairy Compact Info In
conjunction with this month's On the Farm: Will There
be a Dairy Compact?, DownStreet is providing this list of links to
Dairy Compact info from each of our three Congressional reps -- Senators
Jeffords and Leahy, and Congressman Bernie Sanders.
As we
noted in our feature, while the Compact did not get renewed, the idea is still
alive. And the future of a Compact, whatever form it may take, is going to
rest with the Congress. In that light, you can use these links to track
our reps' work on some sort of Compact, and also to contact them with your
questions or comments or concerns.
So ...
Dairy Compact Info on Vermont Reps' Web Sites It
should be said that the amount of info on any particular topic or issue on any
of these web sites is not necessarily a direct measure of how hard that rep is
working on the issue, nor of how effective he has been or will be. On the
other hand, it does seem fair to say that it does represent a level of
commitment to making use of newer technology to keep constituents informed.
Jeffords:
Northeast Dairy Compact Issue Brief
Senator
Jefford's site offers a summary of the Compact --
its background and history -- up through, it seems,
about February of this year. . On
Senator Jeffords' Issue Section,
there are also lots of links to other issues,
including Agriculture,
which contains the links to the Northeast Dairy
Compact Issue Breif, as well as links to the VT Department of Agriculture,
the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
and a page of miscellaneous Agriculture Links.
A separate page entitled Dairy Compact
-- a press release issued back in August of 1999 --
also appears on the Ag Issues page. .
Leahy:
Joint Statement On Expiration of the Northeast Dairy
Compact
The only page we could find on Senator Leahy's site
relating to the Dairy Compact {we tried the search
page, but it kept timing out} was this one -- the
text of the Joint Statement released by Leahy,
Jeffords and Sanders back in late September.
Leahy's site also offers direct links to "Major
Issues," but the Dairy Compact was not among
them. . At
least somewhat understandably, as Chair of the
Senate Judiciary Committee, lots of the focus of
Senator Leahy's site these days seems to be taken up
with anti-terrorism legislation. .
Sanders:
Northeast Dairy Compact
Without
playing favorites, we have to say that Bernie's
site, far and away, is the best of the three. That's
true not only for Dairy Compact info, but for just
about any other issue you care to name. The fact is,
Bernie's team works hard on getting information out,
and it shows. ... . The
Dairy Compact page here presents an overview by
highlighting the provisions of H.R. 1604, the Dairy
Consumers and Producers Protection Act, which was
passed into law by appropriations in '99. But
it doesn't end there. What follows is a
lengthy list of "Bernie's Documents"
relating to the Compact going back three
years. You'll find articles, press releases,
statements, legislative up-dates, letters, and even
a few links to multimedia presentations. . In
addition to the Dairy Compact info, Sanders' site
also has info on Milk Pricing Reform,
Agri-Tourism,
Disaster Relief,
and more.
There are plenty of other resources focused on the Dairy Compact
out there on the web -- both pro and con. But from the standpoint of
getting something done, these sites are your best bet. Stay informed and
let our reps know what your thoughts are on this important issue.
