Anthrax bacteria can survive in dry earth for decades, but are susceptible to a variety of things, including, according to Harrison's [Principals of Internal Medicine], "boiling for 10 min. ... treatment with oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide, or by dilute formaldehyde."  Harrison's also notes that "most strains of B. anthracis are susceptible to penicillin."  ...  Why, then, is there the focus on Cipro and concern about adequate supplies of antibiotics for the treatment of anthrax? ...
