Puzzling Evidence

Puzzling Evidence:  True Stories ...

Presumably in the context of Senator Jeffords' decision last month to leave the Republican Party, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville) conducted a survey on questions of conscience, authority and character.

While the vast majority of Americans evidently believe that "following your own conscience" is indicative of a strong character, at least one other belief would seem to contradict this one.

The Harper's Index, one of our long-time favorite sources for statistical tid-bits that pack a good bit of revelation into a tight space, juxtaposed the following set of stats from the UVa source:

.

Conscience & Character?

  • Percentage of Americans who believe that "following your own conscience" is a mark of a strong character : 97
    .

  • Percentage who believe that "obeying those in positions of authority" is : 92

Another interesting juxtaposition comes from comparing a still-recent political speech from President Bush with some stats that had appeared in Harper's the previous month.  We ran it here last month, but we think it bears repeating, at least until the price of gas comes down or we come to our senses, whichever comes first.   ...
