Links to Auto & Travel On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Auto & Travel to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Studying the Classics
Links to Classic Car Sites on the Web

There's no shortage of Classic Car sites out there, but we couldn't very well go to press without mentioning Vermont's own Hemming's Motor News site.  So that's where we began.  ...

Beyond that, there were too many to choose from, so we decided to land on two others, for two very different reasons.  ...

The first of the other two is Classic Chevy's of Southern California.  We chose it for a simple reason:  ... not because California is supposed to be all that when it comes to classic cars, but because of one very special little collection of graphics that makes this site worth the visit.  The second of the two is short on graphics, but what it lacks in that regard it more than makes up for by pointing you to lots of good auto sites all over the web.  ...

Here, then, are this month's choices for Links to Auto & Travel On-Line:

  • hemmings.com from Hemmings Motor News
We don't usually list sites that are primarily commercial here.  But with Hemming's, we had to make an exception.  ...
    .
It's not for nothing that Hemming's has earned the nickname of 'bible' for the Old Car Hobby.  Their listings are extensive.  The site, like the original hard-copy Hemming's, is well organized into several main section -- Classifieds, Showrooms & Resources.  The Classifieds sections is broken down into Vehicles, Parts, Literature, Automobilia, and Other Classifieds.  The Showrooms section includes Dealers, Auctions, Online Stores, a Parts Locator, and the HMN Gift Shop.  Finally, the Resources section boasts sub-sections on Hemmings Books, Car Shows & Events, Online Car Show, Father's Day 2001, Clubs & Museums, Car Club Services, a Hobby Directory, the HMN Price Checker, and Other Price Guides, as well as a Site Index and info about HMN.
    .
The site is reasonably easy to navigate, though we would have hoped for more detail in each of the sub-sections instead of the more usual search tools you find there.  And there's no question that ClassicCars.com {see below also} is the superior site for free info, including an excellent tech section called "Ted's Garage."  Still, if you're in the market -- whether as a buyer, a seller, or a builder -- you've got to pay homage to Hemming's.

  • Classic Chevy's of Southern California:  ccsctimes.htm
Like we said at the outset, we've included CCSC, not because we're terribly fond of Southern California, but because of one special little feature we found there.  ...
    .
    What?  ...
    .
A great collection of postcards!  ...  That's right.  Postcards.  They've got the whole set of Chevy Dealer postcards for all the '55 - '57 models.  You name it, it's there.  Bel Air's, Two-Ten's, One-Fifty's  ...  as well as all the colors of the Chevy rainbow.  The majority of the site is devoted to the Club and its members, including a Members Pride Photo Page.  But the postcards are the real reason for a visit.  A warning, though:  The postcard pages load fairly slowly.  That's the bad news.  The good news is, once they've loaded, you've got decent quality reproductions of these Chevy Dealer postcards.
    .
CCSC is one of dozens {probably hundreds} of Classic Chevy sites out there.  But the postcard collection makes it worth the time.

  • Cars on the Web
The name of the site is pretty unassuming, but pretty accurate.  ...  There's got to be some 250-plus listings here.  ...
    .
Sure, some are out of date.  But that shouldn't stop you from running down the list.  ...  You'll find sub-section on Magazines, Car Clubs, Classic Cars, Chrysler, Ford, Racing & Tech, and "Cars not made in the U.S.,"  as well as a lengthy list of Mixed Links.  On the Classic Car end of things, you'll find a strange mix of links, including:  Motional Memories, 57 Chevy's home page, 1962 Mercury Meteor, The Nova Supersite, Firebird site, Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum, Rare GTOs, The American Landyacht, The Classic Car-Nection Home Page, Classic Cars {which is rightly described as an excellent source of information, parts listings, appraisers and a listing of museums"}, AutoZonLine, Classic Car Museum, Bill Brauch's Auto Restoration, F-Body Home Page, Bryceman's Oldsmobile Page, 1962-1979 Chevy II and Nova Homepage, Plymouth Valiant Site, '50s 'til now, Automobile Pictures Archive, VetteNet Home Page, and a DeLorean Home Page.
    .
So, like we said, it's short on graphics.  But it more than makes up for that with its lengthy and quirky listing of auto sites around the web, thereby living up to its name.
