Riding
in Style, Classic Cars
I never owned a '50s Chevy. My first car was a '53 Merc -- a 2-tone coupe, yellow & black, with a 272 flat-head 8, and seats we referred to as 'living room couches, front & back'. ... The wrap-around glass with the thin chrome trim ... The steering wheel that was nearly as wide as the tires ... The suspension that made it ride over even the most pot-holed roads like it was fresh macadam ... Even the push-button starter on the dash ... Everything about it was sweet. ... Of course, back then, it wasn't a classic yet. It had a fair few years to go for that. But it was my first set of wheels, and I wouldn't have traded it for anything.
So, the other day, while we were out on a shoot for Out & About, what came rolling by but a parade of '50's Chevy's, -5's and -7's. Just as they passed, I heard the throat of the carb {on a 327?} open up. "Damn!" I thought to myself. "No way are we gonna catch them." We were on the Hinesburg-Richmond Road at that point. So we continued on up, around the bend and across the bridge into Richmond, almost forgetting about that parade, when -- hot damn! -- there they were: Three gorgeous Chevy's, parked in the bank lot across from the church. ... The rigs -- all of them -- had come out of Cambridge Auto, owned by Robbie Russin . They were on loan to the family for his cousin's wedding. Everybody was wearing big broad smiles ... because of the wedding, for sure ... but at least some of it had to be from getting to the church in that kind of style. '55s - '57s ... Bel Air's, 210's, 150's ... Coupes, Sedans, Convertibles. ... When we talked with Robbie, he told us he'd been at for a few years. "It started out where it was just for myself," he said. But soon enough, his work drew the attention of more than just his appreciative family. Right now, he's seven rigs -- four '7s and three '5s -- and he was on his way to look at a '6. ... But enough of the talk. ... Here are some looks at those beautiful classic Chevy's on loan from Cambridge Auto ... to a lucky cousin on his wedding day. ... And, oh yeah: Best wishes to the Bride & Groom! ... Enjoy the ride! ... If you have a Classic -- U.S. or foreign -- and you wouldn't mind having us stop by for some photos, let us know.
