The amount of
info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can
attest to. And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a
fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the
search engines.
Well ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help. So each issue, we
post a few links in Sports & Recreation to sites that might interest
you. Sometimes the links will be related to one another ...
sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling. In either case,
we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking
for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that
every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter

Vermont
If you're an angler, whatever your persuasion, you'll want to
check out these sites. ...
Trout
Streams of Vermont This one's a local site, from
a fellow by the name of David Guertin over at Middlebury College. It's
aimed primarily at the fly enthusiast, and its chock full of useful info,
especially on flies and hatches, for like-minded folks. But there's
also loads of info, whatever angle you angle from. ... {We
should note that the site seems not to have been up-dated since since the
beginning of last season, but that shouldn't stop you.} ...
While
David Guertin's info on flies is a self-confessed list of favorites that can
change {"Ask me again tomorrow," he says. "... and it
will probably be different."}, of persistent value are his lists
of Mayfly & Caddis Hatches. In each instance, what you'll find is
a progressive list that will take you through the season, including species
ID's, patterns {wing and body color & size for Caddis Hatches},
approximate weeks for the hatches, time of day, and habitat. ...
In addition to the fly fishing info, though, you'll also find links here to
USGS stream flow data {nicely laid out for the Lake Champlain Basin, as well
as the Connecticut & Hudson River Basins and Lake Mephpremagog} ...
books {mostly about Vermont trout fishing, with links to Amazon sales} ...
and a couple of links to other resources.
Of general
interest, as well, is the Enhanced Atlas, with roughly 75 separate rivers
and streams. On the enhanced version {there's also a faster-loading
one}, you roll your pointer over the name of the river and stream and it
shows up highlighted in red on the state map that appears on the top left of
the page. ... This is an obvious labor of love, and it comes off
well.

Haven Rivers Anglers Association This link is to
the relatively new site of the New Haven River Anglers Association [NHRAA],
and is focused primarily on stream flow data for the New Haven & the
Otter Creek at Middlebury. ...
At this point, that's the extent
of the site's offerings. But what it has to offer in that regard is
fairly extensive. ... The links go directly to the USGS data,
with current conditions, charts & graphs, the data used in them
{including daily mean & peakflow data}, as well as flood
thresholds. Our understanding is that NHRAA is on the verge of
significantly up-grading their site, including offerings from the Addison
County River Watch Collaborative -- which, in addition to the NHRAA, also
includes the Lewis Creek Assoc., Otter Creek Audubon RiverWatch, and The
Watershed Center.
We look forward to the growth of the NHRAA
site. Meanwhile, if you're serious about fishing the New Haven, you
may not only want to visit the site, you may want to join. We'll be
sure to visit the NHRAA site again. Meanwhile, it earns a respectable

- Vermont Fishing Reports Outdoornet is an
AMIGroup site, which is based in California. But they provide a
genuine service to local anglers with their Vermont Fishing Reports section
of the site. ...
Among the offerings are Daily Fishing Reports
and 5-Day Forecasts. {The River Flows link listed Vermont, but
contained no data, a fact easily overcome by our other links this
month.} The Vermont Report provides a nice overview of what's going on
around the state. But the real news is in the fairly extensive list of
specific info for lakes and rivers. Lake Champlain especially is
well-covered, with separate sections for the South Section, Below S. Bridge,
the Main Section, Mallets Bay, and North End. The River links are a
little light for our neighborhood; but for those who like to fish around,
there's good info here, too.
For a site that originates out-of-state,
the amount of detail here is pleasantly surprising. The site is
definitely worth a look.
