Links to Health & Medicine On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Health & Medicine to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...

Resources for Massage
To accompany this month's Health Focus On "Homemade Massage," we are providing links to the following sites in this month's Links to Health & Medicine On-Line:

  • The Vermont Massage Guild
This site is simple, attractive and above all useful.  ...
    .
It gives basic information about the benefits of massage and how to receive a massage. (Gratefully!)  It has very complete information about its members, about 70, from all over the state. The directory lists the massage therapist, address, phone number, email (only sometimes available) and the types of massage they offer.   Although there are certainly many more massage therapists in your area than show up here, it's a great place to get started finding one.  ...  The list of services is extremely informative. It gives full explanations of the variety of massage therapies.  You can learn the difference between Thai massage to myofascial release, between acupressure and Reiki.
    .
Go to this resource first, so you can determine which therapist might be best for you.  For massage professionals, there is also a directory of massage schools and massage product suppliers.  A very useful site.

  • HealthWorld Online: Varieties and Techniques of Massage and Bodywork
This site offers a comprehensive encyclopedia of bodywork with fairly technical explanations of each type. The techniques are divided into major categories:  Traditional European Massage, Contemporary Western Massage,  Structural/Functional/Movement Integration, Oriental Methods, and Energetic Methods (Non-oriental).  There are several case studies inserted in the listing which give you a sense of the range of problems that can be addressed by massage.
    .
One of the strengths of this small site is its even-handedness.  The author, William Collinge M.P.H., PhD, is also author of several other books about aspects of alternative medicine including American Holistic Health Association Complete Guide to Alternative Medicine.  He presents each technique within its own framework, without judgment or interpretation.  So, we learn about "Zero Balancing" bodywork, for instance, "The theory holds that each of us has an unseen energy body that exists like a glove surrounding the physical body. When injury or trauma occurs, healing of these two bodies does not necessarily occur simultaneously. 'Balancing' refers to balancing the relationship between energy and structure."
    .
While you're visiting this section, be sure to bookmark HealthWorld Online. It has extensive alternative health links.

  • HomeArts Aromatherapy -- Sensual Massage
    Sensual Massage

These are two very similar articles, so take your pick of "how to give a sensual massage."  ...
    .
Although the massages described in these articles are supposedly to get your partner in the mood to make love, the instructions can also be used to give a good, solid massage. Both articles suggest you use oil  and have your partner unclothed. But you will not find anything overtly sexual described in the instructions. There are no photos or illustrations, which is too bad, but the directions are actually very clear and easy to follow with enough specific information so you know what to do and why you're doing it. Both articles encourage you to use your intuition and creativity and not get caught up in technique.
    .
Both articles are published by aromatherapy vendors. If you click on links, you'll find out how aromatherapy works and that jasmine is the sexiest essential oil. These are fun sites. Have a good time.
