Monthly Straw Poll: Should the Legislature Pass
Paid Parental Leave? Note: Each month, DownStreet
conducts a Straw Poll to get our readers' votes on issues of interest or
importance. Not only that, but we forward the results to our elected
reps. So, let your voice be heard ... Background: As
we mentioned in this month's write up in The
State of Things: Paid Parental Leave, a number of states have faced
the issue of paid parental leave, though none has passed it to date.
Here in Vermont, a bill [S.0161]
is once again before the legislature which would establish a fund and
eligibility criteria through existing Unemployment Compensation laws. If
you have not already done so, we urge you to read through this month's The
State of Things, particularly the source material it links to over at
the State House -- including the status and full text of the current bill
[S.0161]
and the existing statutes on Parental and Family Leave [21
V.S.A.§ 470- §474]. ... Then ... Tell
us what you think? ... Should
the Legislature Pass Paid Parental Leave? Vote
in our Monthly DownStreet Straw Poll ... NOTE:
We are asking for a valid e-mail address. This is not to
identify how particular individuals voted, but to insure that no one tries
to stuff the ballot box. No e-mail addresses will be identified with
particular votes. We simply scan for valid e-mail addresses &
duplicates, eliminate the invalid ones & the duplicates, then tally
the results. We also ask that you identify your town of residence,
since -- for better or for worse -- our legislators probably want to know
how many of the votes were from their constituents. *******
******* If there is some issue or referendum
you'd like to see DownStreet conduct a Straw Poll on, please let us
know by e-mailing us at politics@downstreetmagazine.com . |
