What Surrounds Us:  Finally, The Thaw

It's true.  ...  After a long, snowy winter, finally, the thaw has come.  ...

Earlier this mid-April week, the last of the snow was disappearing from the Valley.  And up here in the Bristol Notch {at 1600' or so}, we saw the first glimpses of bare ground.  At one point, not counting the drifts, we must have had five feet on the ground after the second Nor'easter in the same month blew in.  ...  But now, patches of earth ... seemingly rising up through the snow to catch a glimpse of the sun.  ...  It seemed like a long, long time.  ...

I remember one day, not too long before, when I stopped by a store in the Village for a cup of coffee.  One old-timer was standing by the counter, talking to the owner.  The conversation, as it almost inevitably did without much prompting this winter, turned to the snow.  ...

"It's been something," he'd said.  The owner nodded in agreement.  "I had to shovel my roof off this winter.  First time ever," he added.  ...  The conversation went quiet for a while, then the old-timer began again.  "And you notice," he said.  "This year, you didn't hear as much from those folks who like to talk about the good, old-fashioned winters we used to have."  ...  {For sure, I thought.}  ...  "This year," he said.  "There weren't no 'used to' to it."

In honor of the thaw, then, we offer up these images.  ...

Here's hoping we've seen the last of it until next time 'round.  ...

Finally, The Thaw

It was the beginning of April at this point.  But the snow still lay deep up in Lincoln ... and even deeper up on Mt. Abe.  ...

Looking out the Bristol Notch, you could see The Valley was still covered in snow, even though the April sun had already grown warm.  ...

The second Nor'easter had come and the rafters of the shed began to sag.  ...  After shoveling it off, I figured I'd moved about 3,000 cubic feet of snow.  ...  The roof of the house itself was fine, but the snow up there was up to my chest.  ...

Of course, all that snow had to go someplace.  ...  By the time I finished, I could step down onto the shed roof.  ...

For all that, though, the sun was finally returning.  ...  And, when it did shine, it was definitely warm.  ...

And so the thaw began.  ...
