Links to Arts & Craft On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Arts & Craft to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Soap-Making Resources

As a companion to this month's feature -- Scents of Proportion, Homemade Soaps by Lynne Gavin -- DownStreet's Links to Arts & Craft on-line offers these sites devoted to the art & craft of soap-making.  For what it's worth, if you're inclined to give soap-making a go, these sites can provide useful info and resources.  On the other hand, even if you'd rather leave the work to folks like Lynne who have both the expertise & creativity, these sites can help you appreciate what's involved in Lynne's art.

The Soap Making Home Page is one of many informative pages among a diverse offering called The Old Timer Page ... all offered up by Walton Feed, out of Montpelier, Idaho, an outfit that has specialized in dehydrated foods & supplies for longer than the Cold War.  ...

Among their offerings here?  Basic Instructions ... A Soap Making Recipe For Beginners ... The Lye to Fat Table ...  Rebatching ... Soap cooking: How to do it in a modern setting ... Rendering Fat ... Six Old Time Recipes ... Finding Soap Making Supplies ... Determining Your Soap's pH ... and more.  ...  The page also includes links to nearly four dozen soap-making related sites.

If you do visit this site and "the way things used to be" interests you, then definitely check out the rest of their offerings on The Old Timer Page, where you'll find such topics as The Spring House, The Ice House, Building a Root Cellar, Potting Meat, Long Life Salt Cured Ham, Salt Curing Meat in Brine, Yeast Cultures for Bread Making, Making Bread in a wood burning oven, Making Butter, Making Sauerkraut,  The Out House, Knowing Where To Dig A Well, and Digging A Well By Hand.  ...

This page is part of CLN -- The Community Learning Network  ... a site "designed to help K-12 teachers integrate technology into their classrooms. ... over 265 menu pages with more than 5,800 annotated links to free resources on educational WWW sites ..."

With its emphasis on K-12, it makes sense that the first link on this fairly extensive list is a Bubbles Theme Page, devoted entirely to "formulae, experiments, [and tricks" with soap bubbles.  But it goes much further than that.  You'll also find How to Make Soap ... Colonial Soap Making: Its History and Techniques ... How to Render Tallow for Soapmaking ... Lye Soap ... and more, including one link called More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Making Soap.  ...
    ..
Again, this page, like the entire CLN site, is aimed primarily at providing resources for K-12 teachers.  But if you're a novice at soap making ... or anything else for that matter ... this link and the CLN site can be a useful resource.

  • How to Make Soap with Soap Crafters Company

    Single Spot Ad

    --   1 5/8" x 1 1/4"   --
    [160 x 120 pixels]
with a link to a custom quarter-page display ad.

The Soap Crafters Company site is the only commercial site we included {and we looked at lots of them}.  ...  Why?  Because it seemed to us to be the most useful, the least intrusive with sales pitches and gimmicks ... and, generally, the most generous of them all.  ...
    .
Soap Crafters is primarily a supply house.  So, for the serious soap maker, Soap Crafters' Recipe Writer provides a valuable tool.  You plug in the amounts and unit costs for the various oils you will use, click on calculate, and the handy on-line tool will return costs for 0%, 5%, and 9% superfat batches.  There are also recipes for Flavored Massage Butters & Oils ... Lip Balm ... Glycerin Melt & Pour Recipes ... How to Make Soap From Scratch (Cold Process) ... How to Make Bath Bombs ... and even Recipes for Religious Soaps.
    .
Soap Crafters is a solid site with lots of useful into.  We highly recommend it.
