Entering the arena with Gladiator is Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which has garnered no less than 10 nominations, including face-off's with Gladiator for Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Art Direction, Film Editing, and Musical Score. Rounding out its nominations are those for Best Foreign Language Film, Song, Costume Design, and Writing Adaptation. The remaining Best Picture nominees -- Traffic, Erin Brockovitch, and Chocolat -- all weighed in with five nominations each. ... Traffic also picked up nominations for Best Directing {Steven Soderbergh} and Best Actor in a Supporting Role {Benicio del Torro}, as well as for Film Editing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Soderbergh is actually competing against himself for Best Director with a second nomination for Erin Brockovitch, which is also up for Best Picture. Rounding out its nominations are those for Best Actress in a Leading Role {Julia Roberts}, Best Actor in a Supporting Role {Albert Finney}, and Best Writing (Original Screenplay). Finally, in addition to its Best Picture nomination, Chocolat is also up for Best Actress in a Leading Role {Juliette Binoche} and Best Actress in a Supporting Role {Judi Dench}, as well as Music (Score) and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
Among the other multi-Oscar nominees are Almost Famous, the quirky offering from writer-director Cameron Crowe, with 4 nominations, including two for Best Actress in a Supporting Role -- Frances McDormand & Kate Hudson -- as well as for Film Editing & Writing (Original Screenplay) ... Wonder Boys, with 3 nominations, including Film Editing, Music (Song) & Writing (Adapted Screenplay) ... Quills, also with nominations, including a Best Actor shot for Geoffrey Rush in his third go, with a nomination for Supporting Actor for Shakespeare in Love and a win for best Actor in '96 for Shine already behind him. Quills is also up for Art Direction & Costume Design. Billy Elliot is also up for 3 awards, and is director Stephen Daldry's first Oscar nomination. It's also on the slate for Best Actress in a Supporting Role {Julie Walters, from '83's Educating Rita}, and for Writing (Original Screenplay). Ed Harris, previously nominated for Supporting Roles in The Truman Show and Apollo 13, is up for the lead slot this year for his performance in Pollock, along with Supporting Actress Marcia Gay Harden.
Tom Hanks and Javier Bardem round out the Best Actor slate for their respective roles in Cast Away and Before Night Falls. For her leading role in The Contender, Joan Allen {Nixon, The Crucible, et al.} is up for Best Actress, along with a Supporting nomination for Jeff Bridges. Longtime veteran Ellen Burstyn, who was originally nominated in '71 for The Last Picture Show, and who managed four more nominations, including a win for Best Actress in Alice Doesn't Live here Anymore {'74}, is again on the slate for the first time since her 1980 nomination for Resurrection; this time she's up for Requiem for a Dream. Finally, Willem Dafoe {Platoon} rounds out the Supporting Actor slate for his role in Shadow of the Vampire.
