Links
to Farm & Garden On-Line Cyclamen Sites and More
The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a
search can attest to. And, to put it all in context, best estimates say
that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its
way to the search engines. Well ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help. So each issue, we
post a few links in Farm & Garden to sites that might interest you.
Sometimes the links will be related to one another ... sometimes
we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling. In either case, we think
we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be
of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the
bustle. ... Links to Cyclamen Sites and
More ... This month's selections include sites devoted to seed
sites ... The
Cyclamen Society Only a cyclamen’s mother could
want more information about cyclamen than you’ll find at this
website. It is loaded with graphics and does load very slowly at
times. But it has gorgeous photos of most of the subspecies of
cyclamen in the world with incredibly detailed information -- right down to
genetic makeup. . The site is well
organized, with windows opening within windows, so you don’t lose track of
where you are. Click on a technical term, and its definition will pop
up. Want the reports of all the expeditions to study cyclamen since
1987? Want to know how cyclamen was described in medieval medicinals?
Want complete information on cultivating, propagating and caring for
cyclamen? It’s all here, with an international flavor as you go from
country to country, whether looking for cyclamen or for seed suppliers. . In
spite of slow loading, this is the definitive site for cyclamen lovers. Rating:
****1/2 [4-1/2 stars] .. Morel
Diffusion This is a fun site in English or French,
though we've provided the link to the English version. From the south
of France, the site gives you a little breath of Lyon. The section on
The Company is fascinating, tracing the history of the Morel’s, who are
“the third generation to work on cyclamen.” The site also loads
very quickly, is well-organized, and has fun illustrations and lovely
photographs. . The section on
Culture and Disease is exhaustive. In fact, the Cyclamen Society
refers its visitors to this section for the most complete information.
The tips on Caring for Cyclamen are informative and chatty, sprinkled with
little tidbits about the flower. Photos are in the Catalog, as are
concise descriptions of each variety. The News section, however, seems
still to be under construction. . Nonetheless,
for the last word on Culture and Diseases of Cyclamen -- and for a foray to
France, pay a visit. ****[4 stars]
Swedish
Museum of Natural History: Linneus Herbarium 18th
Century Swedish botanist and doctor Carl Linneus devoted his life to
studying and documenting plants. His exquisite illustrations,
annotated by Linneus himself and his students, are available at this
website. Of the 4000 specimens Linneus collected, you can see over
2000. You can also see the original script and symbols used for
notation. There is also a wealth of information about Linneus and his
associates, as well. . The site lists
plants alphabetically, so you can search or just browse. It loads
quickly and is easy to navigate. Some of the illustrations are a bit
washed out, but most are gorgeous when enlarged. . For
plant lovers and/or lovers of beauty in any form, this site is well worth
the visit. **** [4 stars]
