Kids Art ... and Then Some
The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a
search can attest to. And, to put it all in context, best estimates say
that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its
way to the search engines.
Well ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help. So each issue, we
post a few links in Arts & Craft to sites that might interest you.
Sometimes the links will be related to one another ... sometimes
we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling. Sometimes they're about
Vermont sites, sometimes not. In either case, we think we might be able to
help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of
course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of
interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the
bustle. ...

the Kids
Invitational Art Show at The Ferrisburgh Artisans Guild -- DownStreet's
Links to Arts & Craft on-line offers these sites. Primarily devoted to
kids art, The Incredible Art Department also offers arts links for artists of
all ages. The
Incredible Art Department The Incredible Art
Department is just that. ... With an Art Room, Art News, Art
Stuff, Art Jobs, and more, the Dept. is a rich resource for artists of any
age. But it's their Lessons page that'll probably be of greatest
interest to young artists and their parents. ...
Lessons
include those aimed for Early Childhood, Elementary, Jr. High/Middle School,
High School, Undergraduate, More Lessons, Drama and Art, and an Art
Test. The first link to Elementary Lessons seems a little slim, but if
you click on the "Archived" lessons, you'll find more than 60
lessons. The Jr. High/Middle School lessons include another 30-plus,
including five with photos. And the More Lessons link takes you to a
page with nearly 100 links to all sorts of art resources on the web.
... The Lessons, then, are all well and
good. But you'd be making a big mistake if you didn't follow some of
the other links, as well. Art Stuff, just to take one example, brings
you to a jump page where you can link to thousands of art-related links and
downloads -- including, Museums/Galleries | Artists | Public Domain Pictures
| The Art Store | Art Styles/Periods | Art Games/Lessons | Art
Education/Advocacy | Architecture | Art Magazines/Journals -- as well as
elementary, secondary & college art departments. ... Like we
said: The Incredible Art Department is just that. ...

The Magic School Bus Art Gallery A big part of my
childhood came each year when the teacher would hand out the Scholastic book
catalogs. And every teacher, lots of kids, and lots of those who
aren't either, are all familiar with Scholastic's The Magic Bus.
... This site is Scholastic's contribution to kids art in the form of
The Magic Bus Art Gallery. ...
The structure of The
Magic School Bus Art Gallery is pretty straightforward: Each month,
there's a display of kids art on a specific theme. When we visited,
the theme was Winter. The next theme -- for which Scholastic will be
accepting submissions until March 16th -- is Food. You click on the
current gallery showing and you find you way to a page of thumbnails with
links to larger images. The gallery shows are also archived back to
February of '96. And for teachers and parents, there are even
convenient download-able consent & release forms.

We
wish the larger images were, in fact, larger still. But that's about
the only drawback in what is otherwise an interesting site to check out kids
art. {Not as interesting as this month's DownStreet Gallery
showing of kids art from our own neighborhood, of course ... but
interesting, nonetheless.}

Kids Art Activity Center Meininger has long been
synonymous with quality art supplies from around the world. This site
shows that Meininger may also lay claim to hosting one of the better art
education offerings on the web. ...
In keeping with this
month's theme, the link above is to the Kids Art Activity Center {a
subsection of Meininger's Education Center}, which boasts 75 art projects
for kids -- from Airbrush for the Beginner, Balinese Puppets, and
Calder Mobiles to Self Portraits, Tunnel Books, and Wikki Stix
Projects. Each project is laid out nicely, with an Intro, Materials
list, Directions, a gossary of terms {called ArtSpeech}, and a biblio of
Resources. ... Among the other Education Center offerings worth
a look are the Tips
& Techniques {where you'll find helpful info on Brushes, Canvas,
Color, Drafting, Kids, Fine Art, Framing, Glazing, Gilding, Gouache,
Mediums, Oil, Pastels, Paper, Watercolor, and a new Enamel section} ... as
well as their Creative
Links page {which will hook you up to
national and regional
organizations, museums, and art resources}.
