About DownStreet ...
Vermont's Community Magazine

{Click here to learn about our staff ...}

On-line usually means world-wide.  ...
But that's not the focus of DownStreet.

At DownStreet, the focus is local.

What does local mean at DownStreet magazine?

Simple ...

If it's about life here in the Central Champlain Valley  ...
it'll find a home here in DownStreet.

...  from Bristol's School Bond Vote to Vergennes' Downtown revitalization  ...
...  from prices for milk or maple syrup to the cost of prescription drugs  ...
...  from the latest races for the State House to the annual Outhouse Race  ...

DownStreet is about our communities & towns ...
from Shoreham to Shelburne,
from Addison to Huntington
and all the towns between.

DownStreet isn't just about the news, though.
It's also about how we live.

That's why you'll find articles about local arts,
about home & family,
health & sports,
about computers & business,
books & lit,
sports & recreation  ...

It's also about learning
and
learning to live together.

There's more, too,
from puzzles to solve
to straw polls you can vote in  ...

DownStreet is here to celebrate life and keep you informed.

The aim of DownStreet is unique.  On the one hand, like some newspapers in the region, DownStreet has a local focus ... on life in Addison and southern Chittenden counties.  On the other hand, its variety and scope include the kinds of features and tid-bits you'd expect from a quality, general interest magazine  ...  from Arts & Crafts, Business & Finance and Farm & Garden, to Politics & Government, Religion & Spirit, Travel, and, of course  ...  since we're talking about Vermont  ...  The Weather.

DownStreet also bucks the trend when it comes to on-line publications.  Unlike most on-line ventures, DownStreet isn't aimed at a global or even a national audience.  As we said, our focus is local.  And we believe that much of the content on the internet is too often missing out on a real opportunity to strengthen local communities, instead of increasingly centralizing the sources and 'feeds' of news and features.  However, like other quality on-line publications, DownStreet does aim to make the best possible use of this new technology.  How?

Well  ...  For one thing, by encouraging as much community involvement and participation as possible.  In that light, DownStreet offers an entire section of Community Pages.  This section includes our Community Discussions forum ... a place where anyone can write about topics that interest them, and where others can respond directly.  DownStreet also offers FREE web space that can be up-dated monthly to all local towns, schools, libraries and other non-profits.

In addition, DownStreet will also be running monthly straw polls on issues of local, state or national interest.  Not only will this give area residents an opportunity to let their collective voice be heard, but DownStreet will forward the results of these polls to the appropriate government officials  ... whether that means town administrators, state reps, or our reps in Congress.

Beyond this kind of community involvement, however, DownStreet will also make use of the new technology in other ways, to bring content that isn't usually associated with traditional print magazines.  In that light, for example, future issues of DownStreet and its readers won't have to settle for a few sample photos, but can view more full-page graphics.  In addition, DownStreet  visitors will not only be able to read excerpts of interviews, but actually listen to, or even see and hear, streaming media recordings  ...  And unlike traditional radio or television, where the audio and video content is sequenced, visitors to DownStreet will be able to view or listen to the content that interests them selectively, without having to wait through segments of little or no interest at all.  In a similar vein, DownStreet wants to extend its use of this kind of technology to bring its visitors local performances or lectures, and even {with permission, of course} the goings-on in local classrooms or selectboard meetings.

These are just a few of the aims of DownStreet  ...  Vermont's Community Magazine.

We believe that DownStreet represents a community service that is both interesting and valuable, as well as a service whose time has come.  And we both hope and think our visitors will agree.

So  ...  Thanks for your interest in DownStreet  ...  Vermont's Community Magazine.

Sincerely,
Lou Colasanti, Editor & Laura Wisniewski, Associate Editor
