Links to Religion & Spirit On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Religion & Spirit to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

The Chinese New Year On-Line

Chinese Ideogram for
"Spring"

  • Chinatown Online - Chinese New Year 2001 -- Year of the Snake
This site, out of the UK, is probably one of the more generally informative of the sites we found.  And it's fairly quick, with a nice variety of material.
    .
The site includes a number of links from the main page, with an Introduction to the New Year, some specifics on The Year of the Snake, and a variety of info on the many traditions associated with the Chinese new Year, including:  The Lion Dance, The Story of Nian, Food for Chinese New Year, Good Luck Couplets, Red Envelopes, Fortune Sticks, New Year Taboos, Kitchen God, Door Gods, The Significance of Flowers, and Lak Bak, Kicking off the New Year.
    .
It's not the most authoritative site on the web for the Chinese New Year.  But if you'd like to know a little something, it's a very good place to start.
    Rating:  **** [4 stars]
    .
  • Inside China Today: The New Year
This Chinese New Year site, part of the European Internet Network, was a little dated when we visited, since it was still focused on last year's New Year of the Dragon.  Still, it's worth a look.
    .
Among the many New Year's links are sections on What Animal Am I?, Chinese Astrology and the Lunar Calendar, Lunar New Year's Traditions, Things Red, Firecrackers, Sweet Cakes and Rice Jars, Visitors and Staying Up Late, Paying Respects, Peach Wood Charms and Evil Spirits, Public Holidays, and the Lantern Festival.

Again, not a terribly formal site for info.  But it provides some interesting tid-bits.
    Rating: ***1/2 [3-1/2 stars]
    .
  • Chinese New Year - 2001, from China the Beautiful
The China the Beautiful site has lots to offer, including plug-in's for reading Chinese on-line.  This section is their offering for the Chinese New Year.
    .
Here you'll find numerous links to info on the New Year, the Chinese calendar, dragons, and "colorful posters" of 16th c. prints of Yang Liu Qing, which, to our mind, make this site one to visit.  There are also links to related web sites, as well as a link to a colorful and informative site on the Vietnamese New Year -- Têt.
    .
This site is a simple offering, but well worth a visit.
    Rating: **** [4 stars]
