Links to Farm & Garden On-Line
Gardner's Supply, Plus Some Useful Seed Sites

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Farm & Garden to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...

Links to Gardner's Supply, Plus Some Useful Seed Sites ...
This month's selections include sites devoted to seed sites  ...

  • Gardener's Supply - Gardening Information

"America's Gardening Resource" is how Gardner's Supply, the Burlington-based outfit out in The Intervale, bills itself. This is the Gardening Info section of their web site.  ...  The site is reasonably fast and well organized, with lots of useful info..
    .
Here, you'll find links to Gardening Bulletins, where you can "learn the basics" ... Question & Tip of the Week, where you can "learn and share gardening information" ... Q&A, where you can use an on-line form to pose a question ...  and Success Stories, where customers can "share their stories."  In addition, there are Product Bulletins, as well as something called Garden Activist™ -- a section with info on biodiversity, organic gardening, community action, and biotech.  Finally, the Innovative Gardener link includes monthly articles that are archived back to January 1999.
    .
Gardener's Supply is "a company of gardeners."  And one thing's for sure:  They know what'll grow in this climate.  If you haven't already, check out their site.  But even if you have, odds are, you haven't even begun to tap all the resources they have to offer.

  • Seeds of Change - Organic Garden Seeds

If you're really into gardening ... really ... then you probably know about one of the potentially risky practices associated with many modern seed varieties:  Most of them are F1 hybrids, which means you can't save and use the seeds from them.  ...  That wouldn't do for my uncle Cesare, who, while he lived, for more than fifty years, planted his tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and more ... then saved the seeds from the best of the crop, dried them, and used them again the next year.  ...

So, now comes Seeds of Change, an on-line gardening store that focuses all its attention on organic, 'open-pollinating' seeds ... the harvest & re-use variety.  They offer seeds only from certified organic growers, as well as heirloom and rare traditional varieties.  And the site, a Yahoo store,  is fairly quick and easy to navigate.  The site also includes info and color photos of wide variety of plants, aQ&A on gardening, and photo essays on organic gardening.

We like to encourage folks to shop locally whenever possible.  So if you know of a similar type of outlet that operates locally, let us know.  Meanwhile, here's one way to encourage diversity.

  • Johnny's selected Seeds -- Links Page
Johnny's has been around since 1973.  Not only that, but, located in Maine, they usually have a good supply of cold-hardy, short-season varieties.  ...

This is a link to Johnny's Links page, which contains jumps to 10 General Gardening Sites ... 2 Magazine Sites ... 4 Specialty Gardening Sites {including hydroponics & hot peppers} ... 4 Herb Related Sites ...  4 for Commercial Growers ... and much more, including Community Gardening, sites about Weather, and Children's Gardening.  Johnny's also operates a certified organic farm where they conduct research and "grow, breed, and evaluate over 4000 new and experimental varieties each year."

For info, and for solid seed choices, Johnny's is definitely worth a visit.  ...
