Links to Arts & Craft On-Line
Photography Sites

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Arts & Craft to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Links to Photography Sites On-Line

As a companion to this month's feature -- Imagine This, The Photography of Edward R. Buxton -- DownStreet's Links to Arts & Craft on-line offers these sites devoted to photography.  We also urge you to visit ImageWorks, Buxton's web site, for additional images and details about his work.

  • The Ansel Adams Gallery

Adams is one of Ted Buxton's favorite photographers. This site, which is primarily devoted to selling reproductions of Adams' work in posters, notecards, etc., is nonetheless a reasonably quick, solidly informative, and thorough site.  ...

From the main page, in addition to the stuff for sale, there are links to an Ansel Adams Biography, Original Photographs {by other photographers in the Adams tradition}, Locations at which to view the work {Yosemite, Monterey, and the recently restored Mono Lake facility}, Exhibit Schedules, and more.  There is also a comprehensive listing of the 2001 workshops available, including "An Introduction to Platinum Printing" {which is already filled}, "Meeting the Landscape on Its Own Terms," "Introduction to Superlarge Format Photography," "The Black and White Creative Process," "The Large Format Photography Workshop."  Workshops begin next month and run through early December.  Unfortunately, even if understandably, the view of Adams' images is limited to the repro's associated with the merchandise

Nonetheless, if you appreciate Ansel Adams, and more still if you're not already familiar with his work, this site is a must see.
    Rating: **** [4 stars]

  • Masters of Photography

If you're interested in the history of photography and want to see plenty of images to boot, then this is the site to visit.  ...

Care to see a brief sampling of whose images are here?  How's about Ansel Adams, Alvarez, Bravo, Arbus, Atget, Brandt, Brassaļ, Cunningham, Eggleston, Evans, Friedlander, Hine, Klein, Koudelka, Lange, Lartigue, Mapplethorpe, Modotti, Muybridge, Outerbridge, Porter, Riis, Rodchenko, Salgado, Steichen, Stieglitz, Strand, Talbot, Weston, White, and Winogrand!?!
    .
These sites are absolutely worth a look.
    Rating:  ****1/2 [4-1/2 stars]

  • KODAK:  Taking Great Pictures

Eastman-Kodak has long been synonymous with American photography.  This site shows something of why Kodak may still lay claim.  ...

If you're already an accomplished photographer, you may not find anything new under the sun here.  But if you're like most, you can probably learn a thing or a dozen to help rid yourself of some of those annoying problems that keep popping up in your pix.  From the main page, there are links to a Guide to Better Pictures {including info on Top 10 Techniques; Choosing Film; Lenses, Filters & Attachments; Lighting Exposure; Flash Photography; Close-ups; Composition; Camera Care & Handling; Special Situations & Subjects; Remedies for Problem Pictures; Film Developing & Much More; and a Glossary of Photographic Terms}.  There's also a special section devoted to Preserving Family Albums, as well as several on-line tutorials, including the Language of Light, Beginning Composition, and Teaching Basic Darkroom Techniques.  Finally, under Additional Resources, you'll also find a comprehensive listing of Kodak publications, as well as lots of useful info on digital photography under the heading of "Doing More with Your Pictures."

We've come a long way from the Kodak Brownie.  And Kodak's site has come a long way from when we first visited a few years back
    Rating: ****1/2 [4-1/2 stars]
