This Issue:  Pop Christmas, 1942 - 1962

These are DownStreet's offerings for Christmas for pop fans ...  six tunes spanning twenty years, between 1942 - 1962.  For those interested in more traditional fare, check out this month's Religion & Spirit.  ... Meanwhile: Enjoy! ... And

The Selections ...  This sampling includes some of the standard chestnuts of the era:

  • White Christmas: B-B-B-Bing sang it.  But the music & lyrics are by Irving Berlin.  The song was introduced via the Paramount film, Holiday Inn.  The song was #1 on the Lucky Strike Hit Parade for the year, having spent 36 weeks at the top of the charts. 1942.

  • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas:  Music by Hugh Martin & lyrics by Ralph Blane, who also collaborated with Harold Arlen and Harry Warren. This tune, along with The Boy Next Door and The Trolley Song, is from the 1942 Judy Garland hit, Meet Me in St. Louis. The recording here was made two years later. 1944.

  • Jingle Bell Rock:  This has got to be the most well-known and most-played rock Christmas song ever.  Music and lyrics by Joe Beal & Jim Boothe, Bobby Helms at the ... well ... helm.  1957.

  • I'll Be Home for Christmas:  Music and lyrics by Walter Kent, Kim Gannon & Buck Ram.  This one came our during WW II, and even twenty years later, with another war going on, it was still able to pull at the heart strings.  This is a 1959 version by Connie Francis. 1943.

  • Rockin' Around the ChristmasTree:  Music and lyrics by Johnny Marks.  Earlier in the year, Brenda Lee hit the charts with I'm Sorry.  Barely had that one cooled off when she came out with this Christmas rock favorite -- #3 on Rhino Records All-Time Xmas charts.  1960.

  • Silent Night:  Lyrics by Joseph Mohr; music by Franz Gruber.  This perennial Christmas favorite is sung here by Gospel great, Mahalia Jackson # 5 on Rhino Records All-Time Xmas charts.  Recorded in 1962..
