Links
to Health & Medicine On-Line
This issue's Links to Health & Medicine On-Line is a little out of the
ordinary. ... Usually, we'll link
more specifically to health sites, whether for traditional or complementary
medicine. But with the prescription drug debates going on, and the
elections around the corner, this time, we thought it might be at least as
useful to link to the info available on-line about prescription drug legislation
from our Congressional reps. We hope you
find the following sites as informative as we do. Yoga
Sites ... As a companion to this month's focus on yoga, the
following sites are recommended: The
Yoga Site The Yoga Site offers an extensive collection of info in
an easy-to-navigate and reasonably fast fashion. From
the first page, there are links to separate sections for Postures, Yoga
Retreats, Styles of Yoga, and Meditation. In addition, you'll find a
Q&A section, Yoga Therapy News, Links, as well as links to Newsgroups
and Organizations, and a section devoted entirely to Pranayama {yogic
breathing}. The main page also has a listing of both current and
recent features. Finally, there is also an on-line store.
There
are lots of yoga sites out there. This one is among the best of them. Rating:

- YREC
- Yoga Research and Education Center
YREC is an informative site
with "More than 90 Articles on Yoga - available online." The
site is well-organized and fast. ...The site provides links to the
articles in three main groupings -- Education, Research, and Healing.
In addition, there is an FAQ and a section on Styles of Hatha Yoga.
YREC describes itself as "a network of Yoga researchers, educators, and
practitioners around the world who value the oral and literary traditions of
Yoga." It also has "a number of organizational affiliates, notably
Kripalu Center, Integrative Yoga Therapy, Yoga Biomedical Trust, and
Babaji's Kriya Yoga Center." ... YREC is "dedicated to preserving
the traditional teachings of Yoga, which are the crystallization of several
thousand years of experimentation and profound insight into the human
condition. ... In addition, YREC is interested in exploring the
physiological and psychological knowledge embedded in the Yoga tradition
..."
The
articles are definitely worth a look, and the bibliographic info is
extensive. Rating: **** [4 stars]
- Kripalu
Center for Kripalu yoga in the Berkshires
The Kripalu Center is
located in Lenox, Mass., near Tanglewood ... a couple of hours from
here. As they note, Kripalu is "the largest center for yoga and
holistic health in the US," and has been in operation for more than 20
years. That's the main reason we're listing them here. Their site,
unfortunately, is primarily filled with info about their schedule of
offerings.
However, if you're considering a trip to Kripalu to take advantage of one,
then the site can be very useful. There are sections devoted to the
Curriculum, a Typical Daily Schedule, the Faculty, Meals, a Calendar, and
more. You'll also find a short History of Krupalu, as well as their
Calendar of events. For
the largest and one of the oldest holistic health centers in the U.S., we
would've hoped for more from Kripalu on-line. But precisely because
they are the largest, we felt we owed them this nod. Rating:
