Links to Business & Finance On-Line

    The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
    Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Business & Finance to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
    Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...

Links to Work-at-Home Resources ...
Working from home might be an up-and-coming idea for the telecommuter crowd.  But for years, there have been and continue to be folks who had to work from home.  It was the only real option.  ...  Most often, it was moms who needed to see the kids off and be there when they got back from school.  Often enough, it was folks in rural areas like ours who didn't have the time or transportation to find work at a distance.  ...  Whatever the profile and whatever the reasons, working from or at home has its ups and downs.  Here are a few sites to help you figure out just what those are.

  • Bizy Moms.com - The Work At Home & Stay At Home Moms Resource

    Bizy Moms is aimed at just what the name implies.  It proudly encourages you to "have it all" and "Be a Work-at-Home Mom!"

    Whether or not you might think of working at home as having it all, this site is a solid resource if you're in the market for a work-at-home job.  The top border provides easy-to-use navigation that will take you to Find YOUR Biz | Advice | Chats & Boards | eBooks | Search | Contact, and the Bizy Moms Logo Shop.  Find Your Biz may be the best of the bunch, with links to Business Ideas and Opportunities, including a special Internet section, as well as info on Scams, and FAQ, and Start-Up info.  And the Advice and Chat areas are worth a visit, particularly for those just getting into it.

    Needless to say, Bizy Moms has a very particular audience in mind.  But they serve that audience particularly well..

  • Entrepreneur.Com -- Homebased Business

    The Entrepreneur site is definitely a little more up-scale than Bizy Moms.  And the site is easy to navigate.

    The bulk of this site's home-based business offerings centers around informative articles.  But what it lacks in general resources, it makes up for in interesting ideas and focused features.  In the section entitled "Are you ready to start a homebased business?," there were articles on starting up a home-based non-profit, finding a 'portable' career, "How to market a children's transportation service," and pointers on choosing a start-up business.  And on the front page, one article offered advice on "Easing Your Spouse’s Start-Up Fears."  Other features include Setting up your home office, Equipping your office, Sales & marketing for your homebased business, Money & finance, and something called The homebased mind-set.

    All in all, Eentrepreneur's site is a worthwhile resource for anyone considering a home-based business and is definitely worth a look.

  • Home Business Magazine

    HBM's site seems more than a little dated.  The front page offering from our visit had a headline feature that told how home business owners networked to help get Jesse Ventura elected, an article which began "Last November 4th, the morning after the 1998 elections ..." [Italics added.}

    Still, HBM provides some valuable resources for the individual involved in a home business.  All of the major links to the left -- Business Start Up, Business Opportunities, Marketing & Sales, Home Office, Web Mastery, Tele-Commuter, Management, and Money -- include at least several articles each, at least one or two of which are worth a look {like "Caring For Your Child While Caring For Your Business"}.  But don't expect the links to the sub-sections to take you anywhere.  {At least they didn't on our visit.}

    HBM seems like a good idea.  And it seemed to have gotten off to a good start.  We're not sure what happened in the interim, it may have been something like the obverse of the title of one of their own feature articles -- "Dot-Com Dreams: Anatomy of a Start-Up."  In this case, it may be close to time for a post-mortem.  But while it's still there, it's worth a look.
