Travel ... Here & There
The Christmas Spirit a Day Away
Boston & Montréal

If you're sticking close to home for the holidays, you may still want to consider an overnight to one of our neighboring metro areas -- either Montréal to the North, or Boston to the South.  Both have a lot to offer, and both are worth an overnight, or, in a pinch, even a day trip, especially Montréal, which is certainly closer to home.

Tree Outside Pru Bldg., Boston

Both towns have goings-on for the holidays.  What follows, then, is just a quick overview, with a few links on our Links to Auto & Travel On-Line page, to sites that can help you find out more about what's going on and plan our trip.  ...

Revel in Boston ...

Between now and December 30th, Boston will once again be host to the Christmas Revels -- a New England tradition. Similar to our own area's Night Fires production by Theatre Group, Ltd. {see last month's review for more info}, the Christmas Revels is an interactive family celebration of the Winter solstice.  Bringing together holiday traditions from around the world, it is an evening of music, singing, dancing, drama, and more.  And if tradition follows suit {and given the fact that this is the 30th anniversary production, it probably will}, then the performance will end with the audience singing and dancing in the aisles. The program features Appalachian songs and folk tales, as well as shape note hymns, gospel music and a mountain mummers play.  Various times, Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge. (For more information, call (617) 972-8300, ext. 21).

On the other hand, you may want to take advantage of the production of "Black Nativity," something The Globe called "one of the Boston area's most cherished holiday traditions."  The script is by Langston Hughes and based on the Gospel according to St. Luke.  According to executive director Elma Lewis, there's "lots of singing, end to end."  The production goes until the 23rd at Tremont Temple. {Call (617) 824-8000 for times and tickets.}

Of course, if you just prefer to simply take the sight-seeing tour, you could check out the Prudential Christmas Tree {above} -- a 49-foot high white spruce in front of the Prudential Building, imported, for the 29th year running, from Nova Scotia.

Magical Montréal ...

Place Jacques-Cartier

Montréal is definitely a magical city.  Large enough to offer world-class music, art & entertainment, but with a slight feeling of provinciality about it, especially in Vieux Montréal.

Just as in Boston, the holiday festivities in Montréal are abundant.  From December 15th to January 7th, "Christmas at the Museum" will be displaying some twenty-five Christmas trees decorated by volunteers from ethnic community groups, along with Christmas concerts and activities.  {Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, Guy & Concordia. Phone: (514) 285-2000, or, toll-free, (800) 899-MUSE (6873) for more info.}

From December 22nd to January 2nd, the Winter Festival takes place in Old Montréal {Place-d’Armes, Champ-de-Mars}.  The streets and squares of the Old City will be filled with all sorts of things to see and do, not to mention eat. {Phone: (514) 871-1873 for more info.}  The weather might be cold, but the atmosphere is sure to be warm.

If you're looking for a little musical theatre and are more than a little tired of The Nutcracker, you can always take in Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck.  The piece will be performed by L'Orchestre Métropolitain at Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts Place-des-Arts {Phone: (514) 598-0870 / 1 800 361-4595 for more info.}  The performances will be on three nights, December 22, 23rd, and 26th.  This year's production features giant puppets, six vocal soloists and 70 musicians.  {The partridge in the pear tree is extra.}  The performance will be in French {mais oui}, but with bilingual supertitles.
