Links to Auto & Travel On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Auto & Travel to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  Sometimes they're about Vermont sites, sometimes not.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Finding Out What's Going On In
Boston & Montréal for the Holidays

These sites are pretty straightforward:  links to help you find out what's going on in our featured cities -- Boston & Montréal -- over the holidays..

  • Boston.com - A&E

Boston.com is The Globe's guide to Arts & Entertainment in and around Boston.  It's a comprehensive site, well-designed, and very useful.

For starters, Boston.com's A&E site has a calendar {in the upper right corner} on which you can click for any day of the month and get a list of all the goings-on -- from local school plays to international symphonies.

They also provide feature articles, some of which are definitely geared to the local crowd.  But simply check out the listings under "Going Out," and you're almost sure of finding something of interest.

Boston is not that far away.  And it has things to offer that we just can't find in our own neighborhood.  So, if you're inclined, take a peak at this Globe site to help plan a holiday trip to the city..

  • Time Out: Boston This Month

Time Out is a world-wide-oriented travel site.  This is the link to what's going on in Boston.

The site is easy to navigate and fairly fast.  But you won't so much find lots about the holiday events per se here as you will the night life.  Nonetheless, there's enough here to whet your appetite, including Art, Dance, Eating & Drinking, and even events geared toward the young ones.

Time Out's Boston This Month is always worth a peak if you're heading that way.

  • Calendar of Events - Montréal, Québêc, Canada

This guide, hosted by tourism-montreal.org, is definitely worth a look.  ...

The Calendar is organized both by month {between now and September 2001} and by category, including Christmas, Dance, Entertainment, Exhibitions, Festivals, Movies, Museums, Music, Shows, Sports, and Theatre.  The Christmas listing run up to January 1st, with a Salute to Vienna at the Place des Arts.

For sheer ease of use, comprehensiveness, and convenience, this is a must visit if you're planning a trip to Montréal.
    Rating:  **** [4 stars]

  • Historic City Center, Old Montreal
Centre historique de Montréal, le Vieux-Montréal

No trip to Montréal could be considered complete without at least stopping by in Vieux-Montréal.  These sites provide you with the info you'll want, either in English or French.

The sites offer a "quick tour," including both an animated Macromedia Flash version and a standard HTML version.  You can also read about "Centuries of history," or take "The grand tour," with some 150 pictures.  Finally, the site focuses on Museums and activities, as well as Lodging, to make your trip both enjoyable and comfortable.

We're prejudiced.  We love Montréal, and Vieux-Montréal especially.  In fact, the only thing we like better, at least from what's relatively close at hand, is Québec.  But we'll get to look there next month.  Meanwhile, these sites are definitely worth a look.
