Links to Sports & Recreation On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Sports & Recreation to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...

Hunting Sites ...
If you're a hunter and think the Internet is a playground for computer techs only, think again.  While the popularity of hunting may be on the wane among younger folks, there are plenty of places on line where hunters go and gather to find or trade tips & techniques, the latest info on the deer herd ... and even swap tall tales.

  • Field & Stream's Outdoor Life

The Field & Stream site -- Outdoor Life -- is a solid place for all things hunting ... and, of course, much more.

This month's offering included a couple of headliners -- Deer Forecast 2000, which allows you to search for forecasts by state for up to five states at a time, or by month & method {rifle, archery, muzzleloader}.  The second headline reads "Whitetail Bonus, a collection of innovative advice for a successful hunt."  In addition to the expected Fishing and Hunting sections, there're also links to Destinations {by region}, Humor, Forums, and even a Chat Room.

No one ever bagged a buck with his eyes glued to Field & Stream, but we'd wager there've been more bucks bagged because of what some hunters have found there.

  • Hunting Net

Hunting Net has just revamped its site and added "over 500 new pages" of content.  It's worth the visit.

The links from the first page are numerous: Big Game, Small Game , Hunting Links, Trophy Gallery , Trail Cam , Backgrounds, Cartoons, Free Catalogs , Chat, Classifieds, Facts, From the Publisher , Games, Game Cheat Codes, Glossary , Legislative Alerts, Message Board, News, Poll, Q and A, Quizzes , Recipes, Rules, Swap Hunts, Shopping, Sweepstakes, Tips, Tools , Young Hunters.  There's enough here to keep you occupied through the off-season.  But the best links are at the top of the page -- Deer, Turkey, Elk, Bow, Waterfowl, Upland Game, Sporting Dogs, and more.

Hunting Net has pulled together a lot of hunting resources.
    Rating:  ***1-2 [3-1/2 stars]

  • Bowhunting Net

Bowhunting Net is similar to the Hunting Net site with the one obvious exception.  But there's another difference:  It's also more heavily commercial.  Nonetheless, the site, updated daily, is worth a look.

The information is here.  But you'll have to root around for it, since the site is not as well organized as it could be.  Still, one of Bowhunting Net's apparently favorite features is using actual photos to build bowhunting scenarios from.  This visit, they were featuring "Find the Deer" and "Shoot, Pass, or Wait?"  There's also a listing of recent articles, although this is where the commercial emphasis of the site detracts, since the majority of them were about new stores and outfitters.

For all its drawbacks, though, Bowhunting Net is still worth at least a quick stop.
