Links
to Health & Medicine On-Line
This issue's Links to Health & Medicine On-Line is a little out of the
ordinary. ... Usually, we'll link
more specifically to health sites, whether for traditional or complementary
medicine. But with the prescription drug debates going on, and the
elections around the corner, this time, we thought it might be at least as
useful to link to the info available on-line about prescription drug legislation
from our Congressional reps. We hope you
find the following sites as informative as we do. SAD
-- Seasonal Affective Disorder Seasonal
Affective Disorder--ThriveOnline on Oxygen The
ThriveOnline website covers a full spectrum of health subjects from mental
health to sexual health . The site itself is fairly quick and easy to
navigate. Articles
about SAD include medical information, self-help guidelines, and personal
stories. What’s nice about
this site for SAD is that you can also get information about nutrition,
exercise, & stress management. Thrive
covers conventional and complementary approaches like acupuncture, herbal
medicine and meditation. In addition to info and advice about the
disorder, you can also post and read messages from other sufferers, as well
as "Sound Off" about your experiences with SAD.
The
ThriveOnline site is a solid resource for info about a variety of
illnesses. Their SAD sub-site is representative of their overall
commitment to proving quality health care info. Rating: **** [4 stars]
- HealthlinkUSA:
Seasonal Affective Disorder; Treatment, Prevention, Cure
Healthlinkusa
is a directory site which searches 1000 health sites, and it’s updated
daily. It is easy to use, with an alphabetical listing of illnesses.
...However,
in our runs, it tended to be a little slow offering up the results, and, in
fact, it stalled out twice when we tried to access a subsequent page of
results, we suspect because of the numerous ads. In addition, both
when selecting a specific disorder and browsing the results, new windows
popped up offering a link to visit a specific "sponsor" for
"some interesting information," or one to a "featured
book," although both sites were related. Nonetheless, when
HealthlinkUSA finally did dish up the results, it listed over 20 websites
with ingo about SAD, including articles, resources, product information and
support groups.
There are other directory sites out there for health
info. And our experiences with the slow speed and uneven results may
have been a quirk of timing. That said, the HealthlinkUSA site
deserves a visit. Rating: ***1/2 [3-1/2 stars]
- MentalHealth.com:
Seasonal Affective Disorder
This is a
big site with in-depth information about 54 mental health disorders and lots
of related information and resources.This
site provides a well organized comprehensive discussion of SAD from Raymond
W. Lam's publication on SAD in the January 1994 issue of Current Opinion
in Psychiatry. In
addition, you can find extensive information on depression and other mood
disorders. This can help in two
ways: SAD and other depressions have many similarities and many people who
suffer from SAD, also suffer from other depression as well. Mentalhealth.com lists references for most articles for those
who want to delve even more deeply into the subject.
The
MentalHealth.com site is solid and reliable, easy to use, and more than
reasonably comprehensive for all types of mental health issues.
