Links to Sports & Recreation On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Sports & Recreation to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

We're cheating a little here.  How?  ...  In our First Issue, we're running the same links in both our Sports & Recreation section and here.  Why?  ...  We weren't sure where readers might look for auto racing, so we thought we'd post it in both sections.  ...  After all, the race season is drawing to a close, and we'd hate to think someone might miss it on our account.

Home Stretch: Links to Auto Racing On-Line

  • NASCAR Online

NASCAR Online is part of the ESPN Network that also includes NBA.com, NHL.com, and ABCSports.com.  It's no substitute for watching the races.  And it's not meant to be.  But if you love all things NASCAR, then you can't go wrong with a visit.

With the Winston Cup set to cap on the 19th of November with the NAPA 500 at Atlanta, and Martinsville and Talledega between here and there, there'll be no shortage of spotlights, features, and a whole lot more available at NASCAR Online in the next month and a half.  And though Daytona is still more than 4 months away, NASCAR has already posted the schedule for 2001 on-line, including some info about the two new tracks being added to the venue -- the 75,000-seat 1.5-mile Kansas and the 1.5-mile trioval Chicagoland Speedways.  That'll bring the total to 36 point events for the championship, so if you think NASCAR Online might run out of news, think again.

Of course, there's plenty of info about the 'Busch league', too, as well as the Craftsman Truck Series.  Results, standings, schedules, teams, and info on the up-coming race are all just a click away from the first page.  There's even the NASCAR Garage where pit crew notables strut their stuff.  So, we suppose NASCAR might not be your can of beer.  But if it is, you can't go wrong at NASCAR online.  Rating: ***** [5 stars]

  • CART 2000

If NASCAR isn't your favorite speedway circuit, then maybe the CART circuit's your cup of spiked tea.  As of this writing, Gil de Ferran is out front with 137 points, with  Roberto Moreno & Michael Andretti back at 129 & 127 respectively.  And still to come are the Houston Grand Prix, the Honda Indy 300 in Queensland, and the grand finale with the 500 at California Speedway on October 29th.

The CART 2000 site was fairly recently redesigned.  But if doesn't have the amount of info available at NASCAR Online, nor is the site organized as well.  Even so, all the most important stuff is still only a click away from the first page, including a Front Page, a News Index, the Schedule, TV/Radio coverage, race Results, the Standings, Race Coverage, Drivers, Teams, Games, a Community section, and, of course, Shopping.  But if there's one area in which CART may edge out NASCAR, it's in the pictures dept.

All in all, the CART 2000 site is more than good enough though.  And if you're a fan of the open wheel racing, you'll want to drop by.  Rating ****1/2[4 1/2 stars]

What if you're not particularly interested in auto racing?
