Links to Religion & Spirit On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Religion & Spirit to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Resources for World Religions & Religious Studies

  • Interfaith Calendar
This site is fairly simple & straightforward:  It is primarily aimed at providing the CE dates for the observances of a variety of religious holy days from a variety of world religions.
    .
Currently, the site has calendars up for 2000-2004, with an archive that also includes 1999.  The religions covered include the major world religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, as well as others, including sects, e.g., Sikh, Jain, Baha'i, Wicca, and even Interfaith celebrations.  In addition to the calendar, the site also includes a fairly decent Links page to other on-line resources, as well as a Definitions page which briefly explains the holy days.
    .
This is certainly not the most authoritative site on the web for world religions.  But if you want to know about specific religious holy days, this is a good place to start.  Rating:  ***1/2 [3-1/2 stars]
    .
  • Families of Religions
With a two-way link with the Interfaith Calendar, the Families of Religions site is a little more informative about the religions it covers.
    .
The primary navigation tools from the main page include links to religions according to the following scheme:  One Deity, Multiple Deities, No Deity, or Combinations.  There is also a link to the Interfaith Calendar and to Definitions of Religious Words.  Below that, though not particularly obvious, are small print links to religions by name.  When you get where you're going, you'll find a brief overview of the religion, along with the real gold at this site, which is the links to other on-line resources.
    .
The Families of Religions is not at all comprehensive.  But it could be a good jump site for those who want to begin a study.  Rating:  ***1/2 [3-1/2 stars]
    .
  • McGill FRS Guide to Religious Studies Resources on the Internet
If you're serious about your religious studies, then this site from McGill can be an excellent starting point.
    .
The main page begins with links to General Religious Studies Links, including General Indexes of RS Resources, General Resources for RS & the Humanities, Texts On-Line, and resources for The Study of Religion.  What follows is an extensive alphabetical listing of Religious Studies Internet Resources, by subject.  Finally, the main page also offers links to Cross-disciplinary Resources, including Anthropology, Archeology, Asian Studies, Classics, Egyptology, Medieval Studies, and Philosophy.
    .
It's difficult to imagine not finding something helpful and informative through this site.  It's a solid and comprehensive collection of resources.  Rating:  ***** [5 stars]
