Links to Radio, Film & TV On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Film, Radio & TV to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

A Slew of On-Line Radio Stations ...
and, of course, out of obligation to our readers,
links to Survivor & Big Brother

  • radio.SonicNet [formerly Imagine Radio]

Ok.  If your taste is Country, Classical, Rock {classic or otherwise}, Easy ing, Talk Radio, or even Rap & Hip Hop, there's plenty of stuff riding the airwaves right in our own neighborhood.  But if you're after something different, more than the once in a while it may air locally, or even if you want to hear what's making the play lists elsewhere, you may want to check out this site.

Among categories called Blues/Folk, Christian, Classical, Country, Dance/Electronic, Hip Hop/Rap, Jazz, Latin, Pop, R&B/Soul, Rock, Specialty, and World/International, you'll find over 70 different stations that broadcast over the web.  Most of the categories are self-explanatory, but a sampling of the "Specilaty" stations includes such gems as: Spooky Music at a station called The Black Hole; Musicals at Broadwa]; Female Artists at Femme Fatales; Influential Artists at Icons; Soundtracks at Popcorn; VMA 2000 Nominees at radioVMA {artists nominated for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards}; and both Woodstock '99 Music at Woodstock '99 Radio & Woodstock '69 Music at Woodstock '69 Radio.  But our two personal favorites had to be Breakup Songs at Breakup Songs {songs by and for the dumped} & Lounge at Martini {tunes by Burt Bacharach, Juan Garcia Esquivel & Frank Sinatra}.

There's other on-line radio out there, and some better.  But this one's definitely worth a visit.  Rating: **** [4 stars]

  • Real.com's Radio Tuner

RealPlayer is one of the most popular free downloads for listening to streaming audio or watching streaming video on-line.  So it's no surprise that Real Networks hosts this site to help listeners tune in on Real-based broadcasts.

The Featured Genres are similar to radio.SonicNet.  But the variety is much, much greater, with a list of over 2500 stations.  The genres currently include Adult Contemp [206 offerings], Alternative [202], Blues/Jazz [157], Classical [105], Country [187], Dance/Techno [121], Latin [54], Pop [376], R&B [55], Rap/Hip-Hop [76], Rock [114], Spiritual [145], Sports [95], Talk [154], and World Music [227].  Obviously, with a list like that, we can't even begin to pick out the real winners.  But we do have a couple of favorites for locally hard-to-find stuff.

One is WBGO - 88.3 FM out of Newark, NJ, a great commercial-free jazz station.  Another is WDAS - 1480 AM out of Philly, an all-Gospel station.  The last is an unlikely station out of Baden, Austria -- KRKT - Rock-it Radio -- which plays nothing but 50's rock, including chestnuts you'd never hear on most American radio, including Teenage Moon by the Big Bopper.  ...

Within all this, you can listen to live radio from hundreds of countries around the world, though you might be surprised at how many of them are playing American music.  Still in all, if for nothing more than curiosity, this site is definitely worth a visit.  Rating ***** [5 stars]

  • CBS's Survivor
    Only because we promised.
    .

  • Big Brother

Also because of promises made.  Though the curious thing about this one is that the link to it at CBS took us off site to a URL at AOL ...
    http://webcenter.bigbrother2000.aol.com/entertainment/NON/ ...
We're not sure what that last bit -- "NON" -- means exactly?!?
