Links to Learning & Education On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in House & Home to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do..

A Few Links to Vermont School Sites ...

  • K-12 Schools in Vermont

This page is about as simple as it comes ... a listing of links to K-12 school web sites in Vermont.  It also includes links to District & Supervisory Union Websites.
    .
What you'll find when you do greatly depends on which schools or supervisory union sites you visit.  But in the sampling we tried, there were pages of links to other sites and tons of documents.  Some examples?  Student newsletters and projects, including web projects ... information about planning & curriculum ... links to info on school board or bond votes ... and lots more.
    .
If you're at all curious about what's going on in your schools, this site is the place to start.  And if you're concerned about what's going on in the schools, you have no excuse for not visiting.  Rating: ***** [5 stars]
    .

  • Vermont Education Clearinghouse
    This is the title of the page, but it's actually the State's Dept. of Education main page.  Here, you'll find lots of stuff of interest, beginning with the Vermont Education Matters sub-site, which provides everything from a full-text version of the Vermont School Report, to Home Study Guidelines ,to Act 117 -- the Comprehensive System Of Educational Services And The Educational Support System.  {We know.  Act 60 gets all the attention.}

In addition to that, the Vermont Education Matters sub-site also includes a 2000 Legislative Summary,  the Vermont Interactive Learning Network, the Department of Education Safe Schools Initiatives, Accountability Rules, and much more ... while the main Clearinghouse page also offers info an Action Planning Guide for citizens and educators developing school improvement strategies ... a School Improvement Support Guide which allows you to select specific assessment data and then produce graphs based on your selections ... and the Vermont Framework of Standards & Learning Opportunities which covers curriculum & methods requirements ... as well as info on Vermont School-to-Work and a Vermont Performance Assessment Resource Bank.
    .
So, you say you're interested in our schools?  Then this site is a must.  Rating ***** [5 stars].
    .

  • Web 66 / Mustang: Select your Destinations
The title of this page sounds a bit strange, but if you're an educator, you're probably familiar with Web 66 -- the U. Minnesota site which has been at the forefront of trying to help integrate the web into the K12 curriculum.
    .
This particular page is on their 'Mustang' server -- a 'vehicle' which allows teachers and others interested to use it to find info on different parts of the curriculum.  The major link categories are: Art & Music, Language Arts, Languages, Physical Education & Health, Math, Media, K-12 Resources, Science, & Social Science.  Click on any of the links and you'll find yourself at another page offering up anywhere from dozens to more than a hundred links to on-line resources for that area of the curriculum.

Web 66's Mustang, then, is not intended as anything more than a "jump" site to get at resources on the internet {kind of like we try to do on our links pages here at DownStreet.}  But it's impressive lists of solid sites make it well worth the visit ... even if for your own education.  Rating:  ****1/2 [4-1/2 stars]
