Links to Food & Dining On-Line

The amount of info on the web is enormous, as anyone who's ever tried to run a search can attest to.  And, to put it all in context, best estimates say that only a fraction, maybe 20 - 40 % of what's out there is actually making its way to the search engines.
    Well  ...
Here at DownStreet, we'd like to try to help.  So each issue, we post a few links in Food & Dining to sites that might interest you.  Sometimes the links will be related to one another  ...  sometimes we'll just offer up a somewhat random sampling.  In either case, we think we might be able to help you find the kind of site you've been looking for.
Of course, while we can't vouch for the fact that every link we provide will be of interest to everyone, we do our best to filter out the noise and the bustle.  ...
We hope you enjoy the following sites as much as we do.

Oy! Goy ... You Don't Have to Be Jewish:
Recipes for Next Year's Rosh Hashanah Meal

  • RFCJ - Rosh Hashanah

What is RFCJ?  It's a web site you wouldn't believe. ...  RFCJ stands for rec.food.cuisine.jewish.  As anyone who got to the internet early knows, that kind of nomer is a giveaway for something that began {and still continues} as a newsgroup -- a collection of folks interested in a specific topic, in this case, Jewish cuisine, who post and share info on-line.

This link will take you to a mere 200-plus Rosh Hashanah recipes, a small fraction of the total number of recipes available on this site.  The recipes are listed in alphabetical order.  Simply click on one of them and it will take you to the recipe.

Among the Rosh Hashanah recipes here, you'll find everything from Apple Meringue to Zucchini with Currants and Almonds ... not to mention, in between, recipes for Cakes [30], Cookies [17], Strudel [6], Tayglach {a crunchy dough boiled in honey} [5], and Tzimmes {a mélange of harvest vegetables, with or without brisket, dumplings, etc.} [15!].  If you want recipes for Kugel  --a baked noodle dish that usually weighs in at about 20 lbs./sq. inch -- your best bet is to do a search over on the left side of the window.  We did, and came up with the first 20 recipes of {ready?} 148!

OK.  So you're on a diet.  But if you follow the Jewish tradition, you'll be fasting for a whole day come Yom Kippur anyway, right!?!  Meanwhile, why not enjoy?!?  This site will teach you how.  Rating: ***** [5 stars]

  • Rosh Hashanah Recipes- Challah, Brisket, and more
Recipes for a Rosh Hashanah Meal
Apple Delights- Recipes for Grandma's Apple Cake, and more

On a more personal note, enter Joni Schokett and her JewishFamily.com site.  ...

In the first two links you'll find a great sampling of Rosh Hashanah recipes for {ready?} ... Jenny's Favorite Challah (Pareve), Honey and Apricot Capon, Traditional Pot Roast, Sweet and Sour Brisket, Apple-Honey-Raisin Lokshun Kugel (Pareve), Tayglach (Pareve), and Honey Cake (Pareve).

The third link takes you to five recipes for what to do with all those apples you picked at the orchard.  Included here are the aforementioned Grandma's Apple Cake (Pareve), Deep Dish Apple Crisp (Pareve), Apple Cranberry Oatmeal Breakfast Treat (Dairy), Yams, Apples, Prunes and Apricots with Lemon and Spice (Pareve or Dairy), and Simple Baked Apples (Pareve).

While this site is nowhere near as extensive as the RFCJ site, it's still worth a visit. It's an obvious labor of love.  Rating: ***1/2 [3 1/2 stars]

  • High Holy Days on the Net - Recipes

Our final selection for recipes  for Rosh Hashanah this issue comes from holidays.net ...  This link will take you to some two dozen recipes, broken down by categories.  ...

    Here, you'll find more recipes for Challah [3] ... Kugel [4] ... Vegetables [4] ... Tzimmes [3] ... Fish [3] ... and, most of all ...  {Ready?} ... Desserts [9].  {So, what?!?  You were expecting equal time!?!  The New Year is supposed to be sweet.}

While nowhere near as extensive as the RFCJ site, nor as personal as Joni Schokett's  JewishFamily.com site, still, this one's worth a visit.  Rating: *** [3 stars]
